Montmartre is a hill (the butte Montmartre) 130 metres high, giving its name to the surrounding district, in the north of Paris in the 18th arrondissement.
Montmartre is known for the white-domed Basilica of the Sacré-Cœur on its summit and for its past when many artists had studios or worked around the community of Montmartre such as Salvador Dalí, Modigliani, Claude Monet, Pablo Picasso, Vincent van Gogh, Henri Matisse, André Derain, Suzanne Valadon, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Edgar Degas, Maurice Utrillo, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec…
Montmartre is also the setting for several films: La Môme (La vie en rose), Amélie Poulain or Moulin Rouge…
Remember that:
Museums are open from 10am to 6pm and are closed Monday or Tuesday.
Shops often are open from 9am to 7pm.
Restaurants are open from 11:30am to 2pm and from 7:30pm to 11pm
